Are you a complete beginner looking to explore the world of portrait painting? This course is designed just for you! No prior experience is needed. You'll develop your observational skills through drawing and painting from life models. This course will give you the confidence to capture the human form and express your creativity.

Course Content

This course covers:
Facial Structure: Explore the structure of the face and ways of representing its shapes and planes.
Drawing Exercises: Learn to observe and record what you see using line and tone.
Introduction to Colour: Take steps into colour through pastels or paint.
Monochrome Tonal Studies: Begin with monochrome tonal studies and gradually extend to a wider range of colours.
Naturalistic and Non-Naturalistic Colour: Explore both naturalistic and non-naturalistic colour.
Warm and Cool Tones: Examine warms and cools and the earth palette for natural-looking flesh tones.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

Some prior knowledge of art materials, tools and techniques is required to make this a more beneficial experience.

First Class Requirements

Pencil and a rubber. A materials list will be given out in the first class.

Assessment Methods

Each session will conclude with informal, supportive group critiques, giving you the opportunity to share your work and receive constructive feedback. Throughout the course, your tutor will provide individual verbal feedback as you work on projects and participate in discussions.

Additional Information

You will need an A4 sketchbook and pencil, charcoal and kneadable putty eraser. Paper is available to purchase from the college. Your tutor will discuss any further materials in the first session. Paper is available to buy in class.
