Course Content

This course covers:
Self-Directed Projects: Build on your previous throwing experience and work on self-initiated projects in a creative environment.
Learning Outcomes: Identify your learning outcomes with your tutor at the beginning of the course.
Practical Demonstrations: Learn through practical demonstrations, group and individual tutorials.
Clay and Glazing: Understand the different types of clay and which is appropriate for which project.
Firing Process: Learn about the bisque fire and glaze firing processes.
Detailed Notes: Keep detailed notes in your sketchbooks regarding each piece made.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.

You will need some knowledge of ceramics.
You should be confident working on the potter's wheel.

First Class Requirements

Please attend and be on time for the first lesson as it will cover a lot of basic information. Please also bring an apron, sketchbook and pen. You may have already got some tools to bring along too. If not, this equipment will be provided.

On the first day of the course, the tutor will inform you of any materials that may be required for this course.

Attendance Requirements

To successfully complete this course, you must commit to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality.

Assessment Methods

Your progress will be assessed using Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with your tutor. This includes tracking your practice through written notes and tutor feedback, gauging your progression and personal development throughout the course.

Further Study Options

During this semester or after the completion of your course, you may also be interested in joining an advanced ceramics class which we offer in a variety of specialist ceramic areas. This will give you the opportunity to explore further any skills that you identify.

Additional Information

Please note there is an additional cost of approx. £50 - £100 for materials on this course.
We strongly recommend that learners wear non-slip, closed footwear in the pottery area.
Some tools can be borrowed, but you should build up your own collection with advice from your tutor.
You will be required to pay for your clay by weight, which includes glazes and firing.
There are additional charges for special firings.
No food or drink is allowed in the studio; a hub area is available for snacks and drinks.
Please allow 15 minutes at the end of the class to tidy up.
