Want to master the art of embroidery? Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to refine your skills, this course is for you. Learn both traditional and contemporary techniques to create stunning decorative pieces. You'll gain the confidence to design and execute your own embroidery projects for art, fashion, and interiors.
Course Content
This course covers:
Hand embroidery stitches: Learn a variety of hand embroidery stitches and their variations
Freehand machine embroidery: Learn to thread and use a sewing machine for freehand embroidery
Materials and preparation: Understand the materials required and preparation necessary for both hand and machine embroidery
Contemporary and traditional artists: Explore the work of contemporary and traditional artists for inspiration.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
No prior experience is necessary.
All are welcome to learn embroidery in a relaxed and supportive environment.
First Class Requirements
Materials required for week one:
Snips (small scissors for thread)
8 embroidery hoop
1.5m cotton tape
30x 30cm medium weight calico or other plain weave fabric (or a 1m length for the duration of the course)
A selection of six stranded cotton embroidery thread (preferably DMC)
Crewell needles (sizes 7-9)
Acid free tissue paper
Pencil
Black machine thread
Dress making shears (to cut fabric)
Sketchbook (optional)
Please come to the first session of the course with the equipment above, whilst there may be a limited number of pre-cut calico lengths and embroidery hoops to purchase on the day this cannot be guaranteed.
Attendance Requirements
To successfully complete this course, you must commit to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality.
Assessment Methods
Your progress will be assessed through Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with your tutor. We'll track your practice through written notes and tutor feedback, helping you gauge your progression and personal development.

This is a hands-on course focused on the enjoyment of making. Your tutor will introduce you to the work of a range of contemporary and traditional artists, suggesting exhibitions and further reading to inspire you and support your learning.
