Want to get creative with clay? This workshop welcomes everyone, from complete beginners to experienced ceramicists. Beginners will learn essential handbuilding and glazing techniques, while more advanced learners will explore themed projects and receive individual guidance. You'll develop your skills, create unique pieces, and find inspiration in a supportive, informal environment. This course will help you unlock your artistic potential and connect with a community of fellow creatives.
Course Content
This course covers:
Pinch Pots: Making 7-8 pinch pots and learning decorating techniques like incision, slip, and burnishing.
Coiled Vessels: Learning how to make 1-3 coiled vessels and apply decoration. Includes an induction to the glaze room.
Slab Building: Rolling out clay, allowing it to get leather hard, and accurately cutting to a template to make 3D objects.
Refining Techniques: Repeating methods learned to create refined pieces and instruction in how to use moulds. Class notes provided.
Project Work: Improvers and advanced learners can hone skills, create something following the project theme, or objects of their own choice with tutor advice.
Clay and Glazing: Understanding the cost of slip, glazes, and kiln firings included with the cost of the clay.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
This course is for anyone who wants to learn more about ceramic handbuilding.
Beginners are welcome – no previous experience is needed.
First Class Requirements
Please attend and be on time for the first lesson as it will cover a lot of basic information. Please also bring an apron, sketchbook and pen. You may have already got some tools to bring along too. If not, this equipment will be provided.
On the first day of the course, the tutor will inform you of any materials that may be required for this course.
Attendance Requirements
To successfully complete this course, you must commit to aim for 100% attendance and punctuality.
Assessment Methods
Your progress will be assessed through Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) and regular discussions with your tutor. You'll track your practice through written notes and receive tutor feedback, helping you gauge your progression and personal development. After this course, you could explore more advanced ceramics courses or develop your own independent practice.
Further Study Options
Courses in handbuilding and decorating techniques, throwing on a wheel, figurative sculpture and a course in plaster, mould making, decorating and press moulding are all available at RHACC. There are also opportunities to sell work in the college shop and at some exhibitions/market.
Additional Information
No food or drink is allowed in the studio; a nearby hub area is available for snacks and drinks.
You will need to pay for materials and firing. Details will be provided in the first class. You can also bring your own materials, but on-site storage is limited to college-purchased items.
Please allow 15 minutes at the end of each class to tidy up.
Please note there is an additional cost of approx. £50 - £100 for materials on this course.
