Why Study This Course?
Looking to improve your Jazz playing skills in an ensemble setting?
This short intensive course will provide you with the learning environment to support development in your jazz playing, confidence and understanding.
Performance opportunities will be available through college activities and links with local venues.
Although there will be no formal assessment on this course you will be able to identify individual goals and later reflect on your development. After the course you may seek to further your playing in professional and semi-professional Jazz contexts.
Please note that whilst most of the classes in your course will be classroom based, the final session of the course may be in the form of a cross-college jazz concert evening or performance event and so may not be on the same day and time of your course.
The course will explore topics such as:-Musicianship and practice skills-Understanding and applying theory-Composition and arranging for small and medium ensembles-Developing ensemble skills (rehearsal and performance)-Developing improvisation-Promoting yourself within the local and wider jazz scene
This course is not suitable for complete beginners and you should be able to read music at least enough to work through jazz Song charts and to have a reasonable grasp of scales and common chord progressions using 7th and other 4 note chords types.
