Why Study This Course?
This practical and creative course introduces a selection of fabric printing techniques, including block printing, screen printing and transfer (sublimation) printing. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on sessions, you will explore different ways of designing and printing onto fabric, creating your own printed pieces along the way.
Suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience in art, design or textiles, the course encourages you to work from your own ideas, drawings or imagery, alongside provided materials, to develop individual outcomes.
The course is hands-on and exploratory, while also introducing key techniques and processes. It offers an opportunity to build confidence and develop practical skills while exploring the many creative possibilities of fabric printing. You will produce a range of sample prints as well as more developed fabric pieces, such as tote bags, textile panels or scarves.
You will be introduced to fabric printing through a series of guided demonstrations and practical sessions. The course focuses on a small selection of techniques, allowing time to explore each process and build confidence.
Topics covered may include:
· An introduction to fabric printing and its creative possibilities
· Approaches to designing for fabric, including pattern and composition
· Working with colour, layering and simple registration
· Using stencils and masks to develop imagery
· Producing a range of sample prints
Techniques will include:
· Block printing: making hand-carved blocks to create a beautiful repeat pattern print on fabric using simple motifs
· Screen printing: developing a bold design and printing onto fabric using stencil
-based methods to create a tote bag, t-shirt or fabric panel
· Transfer (sublimation) printing: exploring a more painterly approach using vibrant and surprising colour, with marks and stencils, transferring designs onto fabric to create a scarf or fabric panel
The course emphasises exploration, developing ideas and building confidence in working with different materials and processes.
First Class Requirements
To be eligible for this course you must be 19 or over on 31st August prior to the course start date.
This course is suitable for beginners and mixed-ability learners.
No prior experience is required.
Attendance Requirements
Regular attendance is essential to gaining the most out of the course.
Assessment is informal and ongoing, including:
· Tutor demonstrations
· Observation of practical work
· Group discussion and Q&A
· One-to-one feedback and guidance
· Personal Learning Plans (PLPs)
There is no formal exam or written assessment.
